The Ile de Ré with its beautiful beaches, its picturesque small villages, tempting beaches, nice cafes and good restaurants is the ideal place for a relaxing vacation. The bike paths that take you everywhere on the island help to make your stay safe, relaxing and extremely enjoyable. The maximum capacity for our vacation home in Ste. Marie-de-Ré is 8 people (exceptions can be made in some instances to house up to 10 people). There are around 150 m² of space in the house for our guests to utilize, and then there is the outdoor space!The following rooms are available:1 living room, 4 bedrooms (2 single beds, 3 double beds and one sofa that converts to a bed), 1 kitchen, 2 bathrooms. The large bathroom has been completely remodeled in 2010.Additionally there is a private, ~200 m² courtyard for you to enjoy which is surrounded by a 3m tall stonewall.You can get to the closest beach in 10minutes if you are walking, and the walk takes you through the picturesque town and through some of the areas beautiful vineyards.Our house is located in Ste. Marie de Ré close to the old village center in a very quiet, albeit very narrow, picturesque street. The house has been owned by the same family for over 40 years. The last long term resident was a painter who was fascinated by the picturesque island and above all the unique quality of the light. We continue to try to maintain the special character of the house. The house is attached on the Northern side of the neighboring house and therefore it remains pleasantly cool throughout hot summer days.The beautiful courtyard covers about 200 square meters = 1860 sq. ft. and has sun all day long. There is plenty of garden furniture and a table for extensive family meals outdoors. The courtyard is bordered by a typical high (3 m = 9 ft. height) stonewall which provides complete privacy. A grill and some beach equipment is available for use by our guests.All rooms are open to the courtyard, i.e. the rooms are not connected with each other directly; so you have to go through the courtyard in order to get from the large living room (with fireplace) to the bathroom, to the kitchen or to the upstairs. The stairway to the upstairs bedrooms also leads up directly up from the courtyard; a little covered balcony upstairs is very pleasant for a siesta (there is a hammock!) or enjoying the outdoors even during inclement weather sitting at the little coffeehouse table. The Ile de Ré has as many sun hours as the Riviera!The kitchen is furnished with a table, 6 stools, gas stove, large refrigerator, oven, sink, kitchen utensils and china for ten people, coffee- and espresso machine plus a toaster with grill, a dishwasher, washing machine and a dryer (although you can also dry your laundry on the long clotheslines outside).The large (55 square meters = 510sq.ft.) living room with a gorgeous fireplace has a dining table plus chairs for eight people plus another oval table with chairs for four additional people, a convertible sofa, a leather sofa, two antique cupboards (with games, books, sheets and towels) and a moveable easel.There is a long hallway upstairs from which all bedrooms can be reached. The whole upstairs has beautiful wood floors. In addition, the sofa in the living room can be transformed into a double bed for two additional guests, so it is possible to house up to ten adults. We also have a portable bed for small children ready to use and a high chair for the little ones.The downstairs bathroom has a toilet, an open shower and two sinks. This bathroom has been completely renovated in 2010. The upstairs bathroom is equipped with shower, sink, and toilet.

The Baptistry Saint-Jean is the oldest baptistry in Gaul, and St. Hilaire is the oldest Catholic Church in France! This was a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago Compostella, and the huge Eglise Montierneuf was a CLUNY abbey founded in the 11th century.There is a richly varied fresh-market 5 days a week, a book fair once a week, the mediateque is open to all, and the narrow streets are wonderfully inviting, leading easily to shopping of all sorts, and making a car unneccessary. Blossac is a large park with views of the Clain River. The city itself is a pleasure to explore, and perhaps because there are few tourists, the French here are cordial and willing to engage in conversation, especially if you can speak a little bit of French. They very much appreciate your meeting them half way.Charges for the one-bedroom apartment in 2012 are as follows: In summer, 400 Euro for the first week, 750 euro for two weeks, The flat is on the 5th floor ( 4 in France) of a large modern apartment house with elevator which, however, is on the outside in keeping with the old architecture of the city. To be found in the Poitou-Charente region, the second sunniest region of France after the Cote d’Azur, Le Vieux Grenier is an old grain attic which has recently been converted into a spacious and comfortable 3 bedroom gite.Situated approximately 50 minutes from La Rochelle and 50 minutes from Poitiers (both of which have airports serviced from the UK) the property is ideally placed to enjoy the many attractions of the area. Le Vieux Grenier is located in a predominantly rural area within the small hamlet of Croue approximately 4km and 7km from the towns of Celle sur Belle and Melle respectively. Within easy reach of the property are the beaches of La Rochelle, Chatelaillon and the Ile de Re. For contrast beautiful historic towns and villages such as Parthenay, Saintes and Vouvent are equally accessible as are lakes, forests and the Futuroscope theme park at Poitiers.This property is within an active farming area and so, throughout the year, cows may be heard mooing, the neighbour’s tractor may pass down the road and the cockerel does occasionally crow, (usually at about 4 pm) when he remembers! Many fields are full of sunflowers in July and early August and the markets abound with produce from the many small holdings and local farmsThe accommodation is on the first floor of this property with independent access via an external staircase. The gite provides a large kitchen/dining room, leading to a further seating/TV area within a high-ceilinged, beamed room from which access is gained to all of the bedrooms and the bathroom. Outside there is a 5 x 11.5m swimming pool (shared with the owners), plentiful sunbathing areas both paved and decked, a small lawn area with access to the small, but perfectly formed, river Belle. There are also barbeque facilities and ample sitting and dining space provided for the occupants of the Vieux Grenier. The conversion of the attic has been completed in sympathy with the style and age of the property and has preserved many of the original features including many stone walls and oak beams.The kitchen is equipped with a large range-style cooker, fridge freezer, microwave oven and dishwasher plus all the usual accessories needed to enjoy a comfortable home from home holiday. There is a dining table and seating for up to 8 people plus additional seating to make this a real family room-come-kitchen.The seating and TV area has a large sofa, coffee table and other seating. Within this area there are storage cupboards with games and jigsaw puzzles and bookcases with many paperbacks from which you can exchange your holiday reading. There is also a TV, video and DVD player as well as a CD player. From this area the 3 bedrooms and bathroom are accessed as well as the stairs to the mezzanine where 2 single futon-style beds can be added to allow the gite to comfortably accommodate 8 people (plus babies in cots).The 3 bedrooms, a double, a twin and a bunk-bedded room, all have exposed beams and stone walls. The double and twin room both have wash basins. All rooms have wardrobes, chests of drawers and bedside tables and lamps. All bedrooms look out over the swimming pool.The bathroom has a bath with high pressure shower over, wash basin and toilet. There are exposed beams and stone walls in the bathroom as well. On the mezzanine is a newly fitted shower room with toilet, hand basin and shower cubicle with a high pressure shower. The garden is mainly paved and graveled and surrounds the swimming pool. Raised beds around the pool are filled with flowering plants and herbs. There is also a bar area and seating/sunbathing areas, both in sun and shade. The lawn is outside the main enclosed part of the garden and access to the river is possible from here. There is also a productive orchard belonging to the property; holiday makers are welcome pick any fruit that is in season.
