Historically, the house, with its service buildings (now cottages), was built 1803 – 1810 in the then fashionable neo-classical styles by the present owner’s 3xgreat-grandfather for his family. His son added the armorial stained glass window as a record, in striking colour, of the family’s links to equally colourful characters like Harry Hotspur, Lady Jane Grey, and the Mitfords. These links and more would be gladly explained!Geographically, Brynygwin Self Catering Country House & Cottages could hardly be better located. Situated close to the Snowdonia Natonal Park in a completely rural setting with 5 acres of mature informal garden full of colourful shrubs and fine trees, fields to either side, 15 acres of woodland above, and a river for fishing just across the little road hidden below. Yet, nestling way down beneath the mass of Cadair Idris (the 8-mile-long, 9-peak-high mountain range flanking Snowdonia’s scenic Mawddach estuary), it stands just one level mile west of the market town of Dolgellau and east of the picturesque estuary-head village of Penmaenpool, both accessible by road or trail.Practically, Brynygwin proves designer-suited for vacations away from modernity, rush and noise. Cars can park alongside their accommodation. Children and dogs can be safe in the enclosed cottage gardens, or free in the wider grounds. Wildlife lovers can enjoy birds, bats, badgers, and wild flowers. Fishermen can use our 100 metres of private riverbank and free permit to all the Dolgellau Angling Association waters. Walkers can set out in any direction with one of the many guidesheets provided. Mountain-bikers, narrow-gauge railway riders and castle connoisseurs find themselves ringed round with choice for their chosen pursuits. The three-bedroomed Ty Clyd (lower set of four pictures, once the stables, sleeps 5/6) is Welsh for ‘cosy house’, a name calling for its 2 large night storage heaters and its deep-seated, high-backed settees grouped around the shelved alcove. Its single and double bedrooms are upstairs in the one-time, and still round-windowed, hayloft, while the downstair twin-bedded, once harness, room is reached through the conservatory which also leads into the cottage’s small walled garden. Again, there is a fitted kitchen and tidy bathroom with cast-iron bath and electric shower over.
