As the name suggests, Lochearnhead sits at the top of Loch Earn, an east-west running loch which is one of the most important centres for watersports in Scotland today. There have been people living in and around Lochearnhead for centuries, as evidenced
by the relics of a crannog on a man-made island in the loch’s south west corner, and by the location of the nearby Edinample Castle.
Lochearnhead's real expansion as a settlement came in Victorian times after the arrival of the railways. The Scottish tourist boom, aided by Sir Walter Scott’s popularisation of the Trossachs, ensured that the area suddenly had a constant supply of visitors; this shows no signs of abating today.
There are a number of small hotels in Lochearnhead for those looking for holiday rentals around the area. Many of these were built in the early 1900s along the loch’s north shore, and there is also a wealth of self-catering holiday rental accommodation available around the loch.
Facilities within Lochearnhead village include village shops and a post office. The Lochearnhead Watersports Centre also has a licenced cafe, as well as offering the more obvious water-based activities that you would expect in this area. Visitors can try their hand at kayaking, windsurfing and sailing amongst other water sports to attempt. The waters of Loch Earn are subject to a curious kind of tidal system - a “seiche” - which happens on only a few of the world’s fresh water lakes. This results in a steady west to east pressure, and a continually changing depth of water. For this reason, taking to the waters at Lochearnhead holds an extra challenge, and it is unsurprising that the area has become such a mecca for watersports today.
