About Kelso

The medieval town of Kelso is situated on the scenic banks of the River Tweed, and offers the perfect base for exploring the Berwickshire Coast and the Scottish Borders. The town is intensely picturesque, and has a number of historical and architectural draws which bring visitors to Kelso from far and wide, along with all the fundamentals of a good holiday town: great holiday rentals and hotels, smart restaurants, and some fantastic leisure and sports facilities.

For visitors taking a holiday rental in Kelso, the Town Trail is well worth following. Some highlights of the trail include the remains of the ancient Kelso Abbey, which was founded in 1128 and came in for a hard time during the border wars. There is also the elegant five arched bridge over the river Tweed, which was the blueprint for the original London Bridge, and the sophisticated Kelso Town House which now hoses the Tourist Information Centre. On the outskirts of Kelso lies Floors Castle, which houses an exceptional collection of furniture, paintings and tapestry. Also worth a visit is Mellerstain House, a fabulous Adam mansion which sits to the north of Kelso, the Kelso Golf Club which offers an 18 hole course, and Greenknowe and Smailholm Towers, which were built for defence back in the 16th century.

Visitors to the town will find a wealth of countryside walks and a vibrant calendar of events, ranging from the Kelso Civic Week, the town’s yearly festival, to the Border Union Agricultural Show. There are many options for holiday rentals to consider as well – with a number of cosy self-catering cottages, some guesthouses and camping all available within easy reach of Kelso.
