About Aberdeen

Colloquially known as the “granite city”, Aberdeen is the powerhouse of Scotland’s north east. Fired by the North Sea petroleum industry’s oil money, Aberdeen has become a city that is just as pricey as London or Edinburgh, and unsurprisingly boasts a vast range of restaurants, hotels, holiday rentals and nightspots with prices just as deep as petroleum industry pockets. Thankfully, to balance out the excess, most of Aberdeen’s cultural attractions, such as the excellent Aberdeen Art Gallery and the superb Maritime Museum are free of charge.

Aberdeen owes its nickname to the fact that much of the town was built using silvery grey granite, harvested from the local Rubislaw Quarry. At one time, Rubislaw was the largest artificial hole in the ground throughout Europe, but today industry there has now become abandoned. The granite material has left Aberdeen with an attractive glitter to the city on the sunnier days of the year, but it’s fair to note that it can sometimes be a little tricky to distinguish where Aberdeen’s building end and the looming sky begins when the dim, grey rain clouds cluster in from the North Sea.

For those looking to go further afield, some wonderful areas can be accessed from a holiday rental in Aberdeen. Sandy beaches can easily be reached from the north of the city; the wonders of Royal Deeside can be accessed to the west; and the dramatic and evocative ruined fortress of Dunottar Castle sits southward of Aberdeen. Should you also be wishing to top your visit with a foray into whisky country, then look to Aberdeen’s north west.
